Summer Reading Strategies
Are you concerned about your child’s reading skills over the summer months? After all, kids look forward to their summer holidays as much as we look forward to ours and really don’t want to do anything that looks like school work during it. So what to do to make sure that their little brains don’t forget everything they learned during the school year?
First look around you and evaluate how much reading there is for them to do in the day.
Do they read the backs of the cereal box at breakfast? That’s reading!
Do they read the instructions on the new video game they just got? That’s reading!
Do they read the signs on the road as you are driving to the beach? That’s reading!
It’s everywhere, I think you would be pretty hard pressed to NOT read at all. Even a kid who might say they hate school would probably enjoy reading if the topic is of interest to them.
TIPS ON SHARING A LOVE OF READING:
Make sure you leave lots of books appropriate for their level of reading lying around for them to “find”.
Read in front of them (something you enjoy, for your pleasure) regularly.
Read out loud to your kids, even if they can read.
Talk about something you have read together over dinner.
Visit the library for story times or just to check out books.
Look for Story time events in your community to take part in.
Please leave any further suggestions you have on how you share a love of reading with your kids!
