After all, kids look forward to their summer holidays as much as we look forward to ours and really don’t want to do anything that looks like school work during it. So what to do to make sure that their little brains don’t forget everything they learned during the school year?

First look around you and evaluate how much reading there is for them to do in the day.

Reading is fun!

Do they read the backs of the cereal box at breakfast? That’s reading!

Do they read the instructions on the new video game they just got? That’s reading!

Do they read the signs on the road as you are driving to the beach? That’s reading!

It’s everywhere, I think you would be pretty hard pressed to NOT read at all. Even a kid who might say they hate school would probably enjoy reading if the topic is of interest to them.

TIPS ON SHARING A LOVE OF READING:

Make sure you leave lots of books appropriate for their level of reading lying around for them to “find”.

Read in front of them (something you enjoy, for your pleasure) regularly.

Read out loud to your kids, even if they can read.

Talk about something you have read together over dinner.

Visit the library for story times or just to check out books.

Look for Story time events in your community to take part in.

Here’ some pics to show you the silliness we had that day. A special thanks to Edible Creations for stopping by and giving everyone a delicious chocolate covered strwberry. As always, thanks to The Little Gym for so generously letting us use their space one day each month.

Don’t forget that our next Story Time is July 10 at 2:30 and we will have a visit from Clifford The Big Red Dog as well as a special visit from a real working dog from PADS. See you then!

Do you care about our children’s ability to read? Do you want them to do more than just be able to read? Do you want them to love reading and learning. At literacy4kids we support a child’s love of reading by hosting local story and craft times in our community. Each month we spend an hour sharing the love or reading with kids of all ages in the hope that they will take away a desire to read and learn and grow.

Our story times are held at The Little Gym in Langley at 5-6233 200 Street Langley, BC V2Y 1A2

We would like to thank The Little Gym for allowing us to use their facility for this project.
