Mini Lesson Idea:
Seat students in a circle on the carpet. If possible, it would be great to have a class set of student dictionaries. If not, have students share. Place a dictionary in front of each student (or group of students). Place a basket in the center of the circle. Next to the basket place a sheet of green butcher paper. Inside the basket place random words from all sections of the dictionary. (Write the words on flowers during the spring and pumpkins during the fall. That way, the green sheet of butcher paper represents either a garden or a pumpkin patch.) Have a student come to the center and draw a word from the basket – and place the word on the patch of green butcher paper that represents either a garden or a pumpkin patch. All students will practice finding the word together using their dictionaries.
